Self Portrait

We're required to produce a self portrait in our own illustrated styles as a sort of 'profile' for our Degree show exhibition, these images will be placed along side our name plaques as a unique way to separate our work.

Since they aren't commercial in anyway it was a great chance to have some personality shine though, I decided to team myself up with a beloved childhood character (and still is today) Pikachu!
A character this iconic really needs no introduction, but he is of course from the hit Anime/Game series 'Pokémon'
I tried to stay true to my own illustrative style, lending elements from the classic Anime style to help the two gel together better. Enjoy!

Enhanced Illustration - Seaweek (Animation)

The animating side of things is complete, and was actually a lot faster than I thought it'd be, this is excellent news for the project overall, as I should be able to get at least three animations ready for the gallery show.

Heres the final result:

Enhanced Illustration - Seaweek Colours

Colour for the Seaweek animation is complete. I struggled to find the right colour scheme for this, but purple/blue/yellow has come out great! Now I can begin the fun part - animating!

New Project - Sketch and Ink

Starting a new project today, hopefully this will turn into a small series of animations if i have the time. The goal is to produce 2/3 'Enhanced Illustrations', basically a hybrid of Illustration and Animation. I've decided to focus these around pre existing events as this will make them easier to market afterwards.

For my first enhanced illustration I have chosen the NZAEE (NZ Association for Environmental Education) Seaweek, an annual educational even in New Zealand, focusing on their incredible marine biology.

I've already got started on this, so heres the first sketch:

It's not much to look at, but it was enough for me to get started and begin inking.

Here's the final Inked result:
I'm really happy with how the ink work has come out, All of my layers have been split up in accordance to the sequence I will animate them, however, next comes the colour!

What A Carve Up - Final Artwork

My 'What A Carve Up!' design is all finished up. I think it's another strong addition to my book design portfolio. I tried to capture that old newspaper style feel and think I've really managed to do this through my choice of typeface. The blurb especially really gives off that newspaper vibe. I'm super pleased with the final outcome, and think i've really captured the era of the book with the image.

What A Carve Up! - Colour

The design has gone through a few small changes during the colouring process, I decided to add a break in the spine of the design as i felt like the tape ribbon would interfere too much with the spine text. As for the colour, Im attempting to get an old style newspaper theme since the book is based around a newspaper columnist.
I went with the old red letter wax for the actual ink colour, as it was a perfect way to portray the bloodied tape ribbons and violence whilst still sticking to the newspaper theme. I think the colour works well with the vintage paper background look, had i kept the ink black it would have looked too much like ink, and taken away from the blood effect.
